Karl Maybach (who was part of the Maybach company) was employed by the Loewe company in 1901. The DWM was orchestrated by Isidor Loewe (1848–1910), as his brother Ludwig had died in 1886. In 1896 Loewe founded Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken with a munitions plant in Karlsruhe (Baden), formerly Deutsche Metallpatronenfabrik Lorenz, and the weapons plant in Berlin. "Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken Aktien-Gesellschaft (German Weapons and Munitions public limited company), known as DWM, was an arms company in Imperial Germany created in 1896 when Ludwig Loewe & Company united its weapons and ammunition production facilities within one company. Beginning with that year, the rifles were marked DWM. I believe that is correct, all Loewe Berlin marked rifles are pre 1897. It has a bent bolt and side mounted sling attachments with an overall length of 37.25 inches, barrel length of 17.25 inches and a weight of 7.50 lbs. They stopped marking mausers with the Loewe stamps in 1897, that is when the DWM models began making appearance. Model 1895 Mauser Carbine-This carbine may be marked with DWM or Oviedo, as it was made in both places. Between 18 there were a number of significant improvements including the 1893 Spanish Mauser, the 1895 Chilean Mauser, and the 1896 Swedish Mauser. The Gew 71 was a single shot firing an 11mm Black Powder round. If memory serves correct DWM merged with the Loewe company in 1896. The 98 Mauser was the culmination of the design originally created by Paul Mauser and adopted by the German Empire in 1871.
